Abstract

1,133,426. Bearings. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 9 Feb., 1967 [16 March, 1966], No. 6148/67. Heading F2A. [Also in Divisions B3 and C7] Continuously cast strip suitable for bearings is composed of an Al-base alloy containing Pb, the Pb being present as particles which are dispersed such that their concentraton increases from one face to the other. Suitable alloys consist of As shown, the strip may be continuously cast by producing a homogeneous melt in induction furnace 10 and allowing it to flow through horizontal graphite mould 14. The mould is cooled by passage of water through Cu plates 20, 22. The gradient in Pb concentration is achieved by gravitational force on the solidifying alloy. The strip may subsequently be rolled and then clad to a steel backing with its high-Pb face showing.
