In a mining installation in which several identical mining machines 3 have a limited travel to and fro along a conveyer 6 due to the co-operation of motor driven means of each machine with a fixed chain or rack 5 common to all the machines, the rotary cutting and loading means 1 of each machine is, 'by a motor disposed within the means, rotatable about an axis disposed at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the conveyer. Each means 1 is of a shape resembling ,two dishes put together with the concave sides thereof facing each other, is secured to the rotor of the hydraulic motor within it, and has spirally disposed cutter picks on the outer faces.
