Abstract

1,133,104. Sanitary pad or napkin. KIMBERLY CLARK CORP. 11 March, 1966 [30 March, 1965], No. 10880/66. Heading A5R. A sanitary pad or napkin has a main fluid absorbent pad on which a fluid control element of absorbent material of substantially higher apparent density than that of the material of the main absorbent pad is centrally positioned, the length and width dimensions of the element being smaller than the corresponding dimensions of the pad. A second fluid control element may be located on the other side of the absorbent pad. A fluid-pervious wrapper may enclose the absorbent pad and element(s) and it may be over-lapped and provided with end tabs. It may consist of woven gauze, non- woven scrim, a perforated non-woven fibrous web, or web of bonded fibres. The fluid control element generally comprises a compressed strip of absorbent material, which may be wood fluff, a combination of wood fluff and uniformly interspersed pieces of shredded sponge e.g. polyurethane or cellulose sponge, multilayers of cellulose wadding, absorbent cotton, or a combination thereof. The fluid control element may be flat or embossed. The main body portion of the napkin may have top and bottom layers comprising multiple plies of cellulose wadding and a central pad of wood fluff or it may wholly consist of fluff. Batts of cotton and/or synthetic fibres may be used for the main body portion. Baffles e.g. of plastics film such as polyethylene film may be used to inhibit strike-through and side strips e.g. of waxed tissue or water-resistant film may be used to inhibit migration of exudate to the side edges of the pad. For twosided or reversible use of the sanitary pad or napkin, the baffle may be located within the main absorbent pad. The fluid control elements may be rectangular or oval in shape.
