Abstract
1,131,756. Post-surgical irrigation appliance. HOLLISTER Inc. 15 Sept., 1966, No. 41330/66. Heading A5R. In a post-surgical irrigating appliance comprising a sheet-like bag of waterproof material and means for holding the bag in position on a patient, the bag has an open end which constitutes the lower end of the bag when the appliance is operatively attached to a patient, a back wall in which is a stoma opening for securing the bag around the stoma of a patient, a front wall in which is a catheter opening in alignment with the stoma opening in the back wall and of sufficient size for receiving a catheter to be inserted through the front wall and into the stoma of a patient for irrigation purposes, and sealing means associated with the catheter opening. The sealing means comprises a material which expands greatly when subjected to moisture so that, on insertion of a catheter through the catheter opening and the sealing means and on contact of irrigation fluid with the sealing means, the sealing means will expand greatly into sealing engagement with the catheter and, after the catheter is removed, the sealing means will expand further to close the catheter opening to provide a continuous seal against discharge through the catheter opening. As illustrated in Figure 4, an irrigation appliance 10 comprises a bag having a front panel 18 which is sealed at its top edge 20c and its side edges to the corresponding edges of a back panel 19, the bottom 20d of the bag being open. The bag is provided with a backing member 14 having an opening 28, which opening is coaxial with the stoma opening formed in the back panel of the bag, and a flanged portion 28a for loosely embracing the stoma 22 of a patient 11; a sealing pad or gasket 15 may aid securement to the patient. Positioned on the inner face of the front panel of the bag around a catheter opening 23 is sealing means 24 which preferably is secured to the interior of the bag by heat-sealing when the bag is manufactured. Extending through the sealing means is a normally closed catheter passage which, as illustrated, is in the form of slits of cruciform configuration. The sealing means, which is illustrated as being expanded after moistening, preferably is a compressible sponge-like material 25, for example a cellulose material; the bag preferably is made of a plastics material. As illustrated in Figures 2 and 3 (not shown), the means for holding the bag in position on a patient comprises a patient-embracing belt the ends of which are removably secured to diametrically opposed extensions formed integrally on the backing member of the bag.
