Abstract
113,136. Wilson, W. G., and Metropolitan Carriage Wagon & Finance Co. Feb. 7, 1917. Calculating-apparatus.-Consists in mechanism for computing the angle of elevation or deflection of guns, the time of flight of projectiles and the fuse times, and comprises the combination of a number of substantially similar adjustable linkages, each connected to a lever from which it receives motion, and summation levers connecting both the first lever and the linkages to a part to be actuated, such as the sight of a gun or a pointer moving over a scale, the arrangement be ing that the effect of the first lever, which is moved according to the principal factors in the calculation, on the part to be actuated can be modified by the linkages in accordance with minor factors in the calculation. In Figs. 1 and 2 is shown apparatus for computing the tangent angle of elevation of gun-sights having given the range, angle of site, muzzle velocity, air density, and windage. The first lever d is actuated by a cam c and linkages in accordance with the range and the angle of site. The three similar linkages 1, 2, and 3, which introduce corrections for' muzzle velocity, windage and air density respectively, are connected to the lever d by links r, and the lever d and the linkages 1. 2, 3, are connected by links w, j, z, and summation levers x, y, k to a lever n which is arranged in conjunction with a scale or is connected to the sight. The first lever d is actuated by a range cam c through intermediate mechanism comprising a plate a, pivoted at b and having a follower engaging the cam c, and a link i connecting the lever d to a linkage f, g, h on the plate a. The linkage f, g, h can be adjusted by a lever m and link l for introducing the angle of site correction. Each linkage 1, 2 or 3 comprises a sector p, which is pivoted at q and connected to the sector d by a link r, and a quadrilateral jointed frame mounted on a fixed pivot t and connected to the lever x or y by a link w. The frame is connected to the sector p by a link v, Fig. 2, pivoted at u to the top link of the frame. The lower link 4 of the frame can be adjusted about the fixed pivot t to bring the pivot u into or out of coincidence with the pivot q of the sector p. When the pivots u, q coincide, as shown in Fig. 1, the linkage is in the normal position and rotation of the sector p does not produce deformation of the frame, but when the pivots are out of line rotation of the sector p produces deformation of the frame and consequent movement of the links w and finally of the lever o. Other corrections, such as for speed of target, may be similarly introduced.
