Abstract
1,131,282. Filamentary products. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 16 Sept., 1965 [28 Oct., 1964; 1 Dec., 1964], Nos. 43936/64 and 48726/64. Addition to 1,114,151. Heading B5B. [Also in Division D1] Yarn in strip form or of conventional circular cross-section is produced by hot drawing e.g. with draw-down ratio of 20: 1-2: 1, a strand or ribbon of an extruded, foamed, thermoplastic, fibre-forming material e.g. high density polyethylene, crystalline polypropylene, polystyrene, nylon, polycaprolactam, polyethylene terephthalate, polyacrylonitrile, so that it becomes orientated essentially in the direction of extrusion and subjecting the drawn material to mechanical forces, as may be established by rubbing, conventional twisting ¢-12 turns per inch, shaking, beating perhaps by ultrasonic or air jet means, applied in a direction transverse to the direction of extrusion of the material, such that the walls of the foam are broken down and converted into a three-dimensional structure of interconnected fibre elements some of which are branched or " trilobal " and some of which have loose or free ends. The structure may be sub-divided to produce several yarns of required cross-sectional dimensions. Twisted and perhaps intertwisted or plied yarns may be heat-set and/or bulked as by use of corrugated rollers or air jets.
