Abstract
1,131,116. Corrugated paper board. NATIONAL STARCH & CHEMICAL CORP. 16 June, 1966 [17 June, 1965], No. 27043/66. Heading B5N. A process of preparing water-resistant corrugated paperboard by adhesively bonding at least one liner to the tips of the corrugations of a corrugated paper strip, which process comprises applying an adhesive which is at an elevated temperature of at least 140‹ F. and which comprises an aqueous dispersion of an amylose product, the amylose product containing at least 50% by weight of amylose, to the protruding tips on at least one surface of the corrugated paper strip, applying at least one liner to the resulting adhesive coated tips of the corrugated strip, and cooling the resultant corrugated paperboard or allowing the same to cool, the water-resistant adhesive bond between the liner(s) and the corrugated strip being formed during the cooling of the adhesive from its elevated temperature. As described the corrugated paper strip is produced between heated fluting rollers, and hot adhesive is applied to the protruding tips on one or both sides by heated glue rollers. The liner is or the liners are then applied and the adhesive is allowed to cool or is cooled by passing the formed board between cold plates. The finished boards may be subsequently printed. The amylose products are applied as an aqueous dispersion having a solids content of 15-60% by weight and are heated to at least 315‹ F. before application to the corrugated strip. The products are kept at at least 140‹ F. during application and bonding occurs when the products cool or are cooled to 90-130‹ F. The amylose product is obtained by the separation of starch into amylose and amylopectin or is an amylaceous material, e.g. starch, modified to contain at least 50% of amylose by weight. The amylose products may be derived from corn, wheat, potato, tapioca, sago, or rice, and may be further treated e.g. by heat and/or acids, or with oxidizing agents e.g. hypochlorites or peroxides to form oxidized amylose products. To improve the pot life of the product 0À5 to 5% by weight of borax or 0À5 to 3% by weight of sodium hydroxide may be added. If the amylose product is prepared from whole starch its pot life may be improved by mixing one part by weight of amylose with at most one part of dextrin or a starch having a high amylopectin content. In the examples the product used is corn starch having a 70% or 55% amylose content by weight dispersed in water and optionally containing a filler e.g. dextrin (Example III) or clay (Example IV). In Example V the amylose product is oxidized by treatment with sodium hypochlorite.
