Refractory compositions for repairing furnaces comprise a mixture of 1-15 mms. sized grains with a min./max. size ratio of 1 to 2, some of the grains being the refractory, the remainder of equal size being the binder which is composed of a mixture of refractory flour with a thermoplastic binder. The refractory can be magnesia, dolomite, chrome ore, or thin mixtures, whilst coal tar containing pitch, or pure hard pitch, or an oily material is the binder.
