Abstract
1,129,221. Extruding. XPRESS AUTOMATION Inc. 13 Jan., 1966 [21 Jan., 1965], No. 1614/66. Heading B3P. An extruded product 42 is pulled from an extrusion press 20 by a gripping device 38 sliding along a run-out table 32 and comprising a plurality of individually movable gripping elements (97), Fig. 5 (not shown). A billet 30 placed in a container 27, is extruded by a ram 25 through one or more die openings 31 in a die 22. The extruded product or products are gripped by serrated edges (102), Fig. 4 (not shown), on the pivoted gripping elements (97), when the latter have been released from an inoperative upper latched position by engagement with a cam 41. The gripping device 38 runs along a rail 40 at the side of the run-out table 32 consisting of graphite blocks (37), Fig. 1 (not shown). Movement of the device 38 is effected by a cable 51 passing over pulleys 50, 52, 53, 56 and tensioned by a piston/ cylinder mechanism 54, 55. Pulley 50 is driven by a reversible electric motor (45), Fig. 13 (not shown) through an eddy current slipping clutch (46) ; an electrically operated brake is also provided. When the billet 30 has been almost wholly extruded, the container 27 is retracted and a shear 29 is actuated by a cylinder 28 to sever the discord. The clutch (46) is then energized with high power thereby causing the gripper mechanism 38 to pull the extruded products (E), Fig. 3 (not shown), which may be of angle section, out of the die. When the gripper 38 engages a cam 43, the gripping elements are released from the extruded products and a vacuum cylinder mechanism 62 then actuates a resiliently mounted jaw (66), Fig. 12 (not shown) to clamp the extruded products against a stationary block 67. Transverse conveyer elements (77), Figs. 8, 9 (not shown) are then raised by cams (75) operated by cylinder (76) to lift the extruded products from the table ; these conveyer elements are then moved transversely by rack and pinion mechanism (82), (81) driven by mechanism (80), Fig. 1 (not shown), to remove the extruded products on to a bed (83). Motor (45) is then reversed to return the gripper mechanism 38 to a rest position adjacent the press where it is stopped by the brake. Cooling means C such as a water spray are provided above the run-out table. An electric control system is described, Fig. 13 (not shown). Alternatively an hydraulic or pneumatic control system may be used.
