Abstract
1,129,112. Finely divided solid/thermoplastic polymer compositions. INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS. 5 Nov., 1965 [5 Nov., 1964], No. 47068/65. Headings C3C, C3F and C3P. [Also in Division H1] A thermoplastic polymer which is solid at 20 C. and which contains at least 50% by weight of a plasticizer is mixed with a finely divided metal or alloy or oxide thereof which is insoluble in the polymer, the mixture is shaped, at least 90% of the plasticizer is extracted with a solvent, which is a non-solvent for the polymer, and the product is dried. The polymer may be polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, polymethyl methacrylate or cellulose acetate. The plasticizer may be di-octyl phthalate or dibutyl phthalate and starch. The finely divided metal &c., e.g. of size less than 10Á, may be nickel, silver or a nickel-aluminium alloy. The solvent may be ether followed by water, carbon tetrachloride or methyl alcohol. The composition may be formed into a sheet which may then be treated with an aq. solution of potassium hydroxide or reduced with hydrogen.
