Abstract

1,128,816. Refractory compositions. FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 14 Sept., 1966 [20 Sept., 1965], No. 39930/65. Heading C1J. The base and walls of ingot moulds are protected against molten metal erosion by applying a liquid dressing of refractory particles comprising chromia and an inorganic binder. Zirconia, titania or magnesia are optionals, and the chromia can be present as chromite. In addition, flake graphite or flake aluminium can be included as mould release agents. Specified inorganic binders are metal borates, alkali metal silicate, sodium hexametaphosphate and phosphates, e.g. of aluminium. Dextrin and Na.C.M.C. can be included as can bentonite. The liquid is preferably water though isopropanol can be used.
