[Also in Division B5] In a method of making veneered sheet, veneer is cut from a substantially cylindrical rotatable wooden body by a straight cutter which is inclined towards the axis of rotation of the wooden body, the cut veneer is divided into lengths which form a circle when flattened out, the lengths then being bonded to a sheet of wood or other material. The wooden body 6 is supported by a chuck 4 for rotation about its longitudinal axis and the cutter 19 which is carried in a block 10 and mounted on a carriage 2 is axially movable relative to the wooden body by ram means 5 so that the veneer is peeled from the body along a conical surface. A liquid is supplied to the cutter and/or the surface of the body as a lubricant to reduce friction between the cutter and body. The liquid may be water but preferably is a dye or glue to assist in subsequent processing of the veneered sheets. Alternative forms of cutter blocks are described (Figs. 3, 4 and 5, not shown) in which the wooden body is supported by rollers mounted within the block.
