Abstract
1,127,760. Moving coil transducers. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 13 July, 1966 [16 July, 1965], No. 31499/66. Heading H4J. In a microphone, loud-speaker or other moving coil transducer, a throat portion which connects a diaphragm with the moving coil is formed from thermo-set synthetic material without the application of pressure to contribute to the setting of the material. In manufacture of a loud-speaker, a mandrel 12 comprising two separable parts 13, 14 is provided, a diaphragm cone 10 being located on the part 14. The voice coil 7 is wound on a thinner end 15 of the part 13. Epoxy resin or other synthetic material is sprayed by a nozzle 16, excess material being drawn off by two side nozzles 17, 18. A layer of hardened synthetic material forms a throat 8 and regions 19, 20 may be such that merely the required rigidity is obtained. The hardening may be obtained by a heating member inserted in a recess 21. The nozzles 16, 17, 18 may move round the mandrel 12 or the mandrel 12 may be moved around stationary nozzles. Several sets of nozzles may be provided. Alternatively electrostatic spraying is used. The synthetic resin may be in powder form. The coil 7 may be wound so that one turn touches the next, the insulation being heat softened to join adjacent turns. The diaphragm 10 may be centred by a centring ring (4), Fig. 1 (not shown), the inner edge of the centring ring (4) being embedded in the synthetic material. The transducer may be a microphone having a short throat 8 (Fig. 3, not shown).
