Abstract
1,127,481. Rotational moulding machine. PLASTIC ROTATIONAL MOULDINGS Ltd. 27 Jan., 1967 [27 Jan., 1966], No. 3682/66. Heading B5A. A rotational moulding machine carries one or more traversing drive units each with at least one laterally projecting arm carrying a rotatable mould platen, the traversing drive units carrying the mould platen from an oven to a cooling station and back. The traversing drive units 5 run on rails 8 between ovens 2 and 2A and cooling stations 3 and 3A. Projecting arms 10, 11 are rotatably mounted in bearings 9 on drive units 5 and crank arm 12, and the associated arms support the rotatable platen 16, which is driven from sprocket 19 by bevel gears 19, rod 14 and sprockets 17. The hollow mould which is sealed is mounted on platen 16 and can be rotated about the axis of rods 10, 11 and about an axis perpendicular to the platen 16. Plastics material in powder form is placed in the moulds which are then sealed while the traversing unit 5 is at a cooling station 3 and 3A. The moulds are set in rotation about both axes and both moulds on one traversing unit are moved into the oven, doors 4, 4A which keep the heat in the oven being opened. After the plastic has melted and spread over the inside of the mould, the mould assembly is moved by unit 5 back to the cooling area where the plastics article, after cooling is removed. The traversing units are controlled so that when one is in the oven, the other is in the cooling area.
