In apparatus for chlorinating water, the water flow (from right to left as depicted) through an injector 6 establishes a pressure difference in pipes 7, 8 which actuates valve 10 to close vent 13 and open pipe 11 to the reduced pressure (in excess of 45 inches water gauge) of the venturi throat. Constant pressure regulator 17 is adjusted to close when the vacuum in pipe 21 and gas flow meter 22 rises to this figure. Chlorine gas under pressure is supplied through pipe 3, chamber 29, restrictor' 24 and flow meter 22 to pipe 11 and thence to the venturi throat. A spring controlled adjustable regulator 23 can be adjusted to maintain the pressure in chamber 29 and upstream of restrictor 24 at a selected figure between 22 and 45 inches w.g. vacuum, and the proportion of chlorine added will depend on the pressure drop across the restrictor between the selected pressure upstream, and the constant 45 inch w.g. vacuum downstream of the restrictor. A relief valve and vacuum breaker 30 vents the system to vent 13 if excessive pressure builds up if gas is fed when the injector is not working, or if the injector is operated while the gas is off. A return valve 14 prevents back-flow of water into the system. In a modification (see Fig. 2, not shown) the device 30 is replaced by a pair of separate spring-loaded valves, and there is an additional non-return valve in the pipe 11.
