Abstract

1,126,855. Modified acrylic resins and graft polymers. HONNY KASEI K.K. (Honny Chemicals Co. Ltd.). 1 March, 1966, No. 9041/66. Headings C3G and C3P. [Also in Division C7] Aqueous solutions of water-soluble thermosetting resin compositions which may include pigments or water-soluble dyes and are suitable for producing coatings by electrodeposition, the coatings being cured by heating, are produced as follows:- (a) A mixture of methacrylic acid, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and styrene with benzoyl peroxide as catalyst and dodecyl mercaptan as regulator, together with methylol acrylamide is added in five portions to a mixture of ethylene glycol monobutyl ether and methanol and refluxed. After cooling the acid values are neutralized with aqueous ammonia and the product diluted with water. (b) A mixture of ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid, butyl acrylate and hydroxyethyl acrylate together with benzoyl peroxide and dodecyl mercaptan is similarly reacted and neutralization is effected with triethylamine. The resulting solution is reacted by heating with a water-soluble melamine resin derived from hexamethylol melamine hexaalkyl ether. (c) An alkyd resin is formed from phthalic anhydride, safflower oil and glycerol. A graft polymer is then produced by adding to a solution of this alkyd resin a mixture of ethyl acrylate, methylol acrylamide, methacrylic acid, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and styrene, together with benzoyl peroxide, and heating. The contents of the reactor are then cooled and neutralized with diethylamine. A similar graft polymerization is described in Examples 6 and 7.
