A method of treating a waste acid solution containing iron and fluosilicic acid in a solution obtained from pickling silicon steel sheets in a solution of sulphuric acid containing hydrofluoric acid, comprises evaporating hydrofluoric acid and fluosilicic acid from the waste acid and collecting them together with water vapour in the liquid form, filtering the residual liquor, concentrated by the evaporation process, to obtain a filter cake consisting mainly of crystals of ferrous sulphate and a mother liquid of sulphuric acid, and passing the distillate comprising hydrofluoric and fluosilicic acid through an anion exchange resin of the -OH type until the resin becomes saturated with fluosilicic acid radical and fluosilic acid appears in the effluent, whereby an aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid containing no fluosilioic acid is obtained. The aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid, may be mixed with an aqueous solution of sulphuric acid obtained by filtering the evaporation residue, and used for pickling silicon steel sheets. The exchange resin may be regenerated by washing firstly with hydrochloric and/or sulphuric acid and then with sodium hydroxide.
