1,126,127. Polymerization of acrylonitrile. RUMANIA, MINISTRY FOR CHEMICAL INDUSTRY. 27 Oct., 1967 [1 Aug., 1966], No. 34479/66. Heading C3P. Acrylonitrile is polymerized, or copolymerized together with one or more other monomers, in ethylene carbonate by the action of ionizing radiation, nitrogen being bubbled into the reaction mixture to form a nitrogen atmosphere above the liquid surface during polymerization. The reaction mixture may also include water. The ionizing radiation is preferably gamma radiation provided by a Co<SP>60</SP> source. Examples illustrate the polymerization of (a) acrylonitrile, (b) acrylonitrile-vinyl acetate-N-vinylpyrrolidone, and (c) acrylonitrile-vinyl acetate.
