Abstract
1,125,652. Heat treating strip material. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 6 Feb., 1967 [8 Feb., 1966], No. 5505/66. Headings F4B and F4U. [Also in Division C7] Metallic strip 12 passing through a flotation furnace is heated or cooled by jets of gas or air from apertured jet plates 13, which gas or air jets supplied from plenum chambers 7 flotationally support the strip. The jet plates 13, are adjustable so that the distance of the apertures from the faces of the strip and/or the gas flow through the apertures may be varied to give the desired heat treatment across the width of the strip. Adjustment of the flexible jet plates 13 through screw tensioning adjusters 6 produces the desired contour (e.g. 2, 3, 4 or 5) of the jet plates across the strip. The gas exits through passages 10 to atmosphere or for recirculation. In a second embodiment, the jet plates may be formed from two hinged plates, the variation of the distance from the faces of the strip being effected by variation of the hinge angle (Fig. 2). In other embodiments, the plenum chambers are divided into sections, each section being fronted by a jet plate portion, each of the sections being adjustable to vary the distanc from the face of the strip of the jet plate section (Fig. 6), or the relative dispositions of the sections may be adjusted by means of screw adjusters (Fig. 5) in each case giving the desired contour of the jet plates across the width of the strip.
