Abstract
1,125,188. Corrugating tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 28 Nov., 1966 [24 March, 1966], No. 53110/66. Heading B3E. [Also in Divisions B5 and D1] A corrugated tube is formed by placing a toothed mandrel 4 within a tube 1, against which rotating toothed dies 16, 17 are radially forced so that the dies and mandrel rotate in phase to cause the tube to deform between the die teeth and mandrel teeth. As described, the tube is forced over the mandrel (Fig. 3, not shown) and clamped thereto by wedges 26. The dies 16, 17 are angularly arranged and are initially caused to rotate in phase with the mandrel 4 by a pair of movable synchronizing gears 30, 31 which mesh with a pinion 5 connected to the mandrel 4, gear 30 being driven from the shaft of die 16. When synchronization has been achieved, the gears 30, 31 are disengaged from the pinion 5 to allow the tube and mandrel to pass therebetween. Axial pressure may be exerted on the tube end by a movable base 27. Initial synchronization may alternatively be achieved by placing a corrugated section (39), (Fig. 8, not shown) on the mandrel 4 ahead of the tube end 1. The tube may be of copper, aluminium, 90% Cu-10% Ni or other readily deformable materials.
