Abstract

1,124,668. Piston rings. WELLWORTHY Ltd. 5 June, 1967 [6 June, 1966], No. 25170/66. Heading F2T. A piston ring, particularly an oil scraper ring, comprises a carrier member 1 formed from flat strip material and having upper and lower limbs 2 with out-turned end flanges 3, two split rings 9, 10 mounted above and below the limbs 2, with their inner peripheries engaging the flanges 3, and a spring 4 housed within the member 1 with its ends 5 and 6 abutting each other whereby, in use, the spring 4 urges the rings 9, 10 axially against the sides 14, 15 of a piston ring groove and radially against the cylinder wall (not shown). The spring 4 is located by dimples 8. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the spring is a corrugated spring (16) and the dimples are replaced by ledges (19) formed in the limbs (2). The rings 9, 10 may be coated with chromium, copper or P.T.F.E.
