Abstract
1,124,526. Percussive tools. SONOMOTIVE ENGS. Ltd. 5 July, 1967 [19 May, 1966], No. 22296/66. Heading B4C. A percussive tool such as a road breaker, comprises a striker piston 2 reciprocable in a pressure chamber 4 which, in use, is connected to a source 9 of fluid-pressure pulses, the piston being formed with a step 7 to provide a differential area on which the fluid pressure acts in the opposite sense to the power stroke, and a return spring 11 which provides the power strokes. The spring 11 may be, as shown in Fig. 1, a mechanical spring located in a chamber or, as shown in Fig. 3, a fluid-pressure spring. In the latter case, compressed air is fed into a chamber 5 to load a diaphragm 35 instead of the diaphragm housing 32 being located on top of the tool, it may be positioned on the side (Fig. 5). A chamber 36 is provided which is filled with liquid in order to transmit the force of the spring to the piston on the working stroke. The liquid in the chamber 36 is supplied from the pressure chamber 4 via a valve more fully disclosed in Specification 1,124,529. In order to prevent the piston striking the casing during idle running a portion of the liquid is trapped in a chamber 44 to cushion the piston, this arrangement is more fully disclosed in Specification 1,124,528.
