Abstract

<PICT:1124426/C1/1> Glass sheets are suspended vertically by tongs for heating and bending and/or toughening. The tongs are modified in that the jaws have inserts 10, 11 presenting a clamping face of granular refractory material to the glass sheet 12, thus minimizing distortion of the sheet. The inserts may be adjustable axially and may present flat faces of approximately 1/4 -inch diameter to the glass. Silicon carbide, alumina, zirconia chromic oxide or diamond may be used to face the inserts.
