Abstract
Thermoplastic synthetic films, unstretched or stretched, is treated with an antistatic preparation which does not contain heat-seal coating material and then either both stretched and then caused to undergo a shrinkage, in at least one superficial dimension, or only caused to undergo a shrinkage in at least one superficial dimension. Suitable thermoplastic films are polyolefins or polyesters e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, polycarbonates, polyvinyl chloride, or copolymers and co-condensates thereof. Antistatic agents mentioned are quaternary ammonium compounds, silicones, phosphoric acid esters, polyvinyl alcohol derivatives, polyamines, applied preferably as a liquid, say as an aqueous solution, by dipping brushing, spraying, pouring and subsequently dried say at an elevated temperature. Stretched thermally treated films may be coated and then subjected to a shrinking process. Biaxial stretching or a biaxial shrinkage may be used, and shrinkage in one direction may be followed by stretching to regain the original dimensions of the film. A final shrinking process may be combined with a thermal after treatment.
