Abstract

[Also in Division B8] Apparatus for unloading the cars of a coupled train comprises a rotary tippler and a pair of hydraulic rams to move each car into the tippler and buffers to position it therein. Ram operated apparatus for moving the car into the tippler, Fig. 20, comprises a pair of rams acting in a push-pull arrangement at each side of the car track and provided with a pin 32 to engage and operate a carriage 187 guided by pairs of vertical wheels 198, 199 and horizontal wheels 190, 193 running in guide tracks. A fixed finger 220 and a pivotable finger 219 are mounted on arm 215 pivoted in the carriage and operable by a piston rod 232 to move into an operative position between two trucks. This movement increases the spacing of fingers 219, 220 thus tightening the coupling between adjacent cars to form a rigid train which is moved forward a car length on operation of the moving rams. Buffers on arms (302), Fig. 37, not shown, are located in the tippler cage to arrest the car in the correct position and by actuation of a piston-rod (318) can be withdrawn, from the path of the cars to allow the next movement. Electrical controls and switching are provided to control the whole operation of the apparatus through a complete cycle upon initiation of a cycle by an operator.
