A goods wagon has a roof 1, Figs. 1 and 3, rigidly connected at its opposite ends to bearing arms 2, 3 mounted on the end walls 4, 5 of the wagon body for pivoting, on pins 6 on the end walls, laterally as a whole about a longitudinal axis, to either side of the body. Actuating mechanism for the roof 1 includes a horizontally extending screw-threaded spindle 9 mounted on the end wall 4 and operable from either side of the wagon by a handcrank 11 and a sliding support 14 adjustable laterally of the body by the spindle. A pair of pivoting springs 20 are connected between the support 14 and the ends of a double armed lever 7 rigidly connected to the bearing arm 2 mounted at 6 on the end wall 4. Compensating mechanism on the end wall 5 includes a pair of springs 40 connected between a rigid part of the body and the ends of a doublearmed lever 8 rigid with the bearing arm 3 mounted at 6 on the end wall 5. The arms 2, 3 have telescopic parts 2a, 2b and 3a, 3b respectively, and mechanism is provided on the end wall 4 for extending the length of the arm 2 and, through a thrust rod 34 in the arm 2 connected across the roof to a thrust rod 38 in the arm 3, also extending the arm 3 to raise the roof from its seating on top of the wagon walls, before it is pivoted to one side or the other of the wagon body. The lifting mechanism includes a pair of multi-armed levers 30 pivoted at 29 on the end wall 4 and connected by a pair of rods 32 to the arm part 2a at 33, the mechanism being operable by the movement of the support 14, all as described with reference to Figs. 6 to 8 (not shown). In a modification Fig. 9 (not shown) the support 14 and spindle 9 are above the double-armed lever 6 and the spindle 9 is connected to handcranks at the bottoms of the side walls of the body by sprockets and chains.
