Abstract

1,123,624. Surgical administration apparatus. ABBOTT LABORATORIES. 2 Nov., 1965 [18 Nov., 1964], No. 46432/65. Heading A5R. An assembly for venous administration comprises a cannula 12 secured in a hub member 14 and a catheter 17 secured in an adaptor member (16), the catheter being slidable within the cannula and the adaptor being engageable with the hub member, and there being a sheath 22 in two portions each pivotally mounted on the hub member and able to be clamped together to form a protective closure about the cannula. As described, the assembly is provided within a transparent plastic envelope (11) and the portions of the protective sheath 22 are clamped together by a sleeve 23 able to be withdrawn from the sheath on to the hub member 14. The adaptor (16) secured to the catheter may fit into a recess 15 in the hub member and is itself formed with a recess (19) to be joined to other administration equipment. A protective vented cap (21) may be temporarily fitted to the adaptor (16) to enclose the end of the catheter and the cap may contain cotton (28) to absorb blood when the assembly is first secured to the patient. A sleeve 25 may protect the cannula within the sheath 22 and a stiffener (20) secured to the cap (21) may extend within the catheter. In use, the sterile assembly is removed from the envelope (11), the sleeve 23 is withdrawn from the sheath so that the two sheath portions may be pivoted back (Figure 5, not shown), and the cannula is inserted into a vein of the patient (Figure 6, not shown), The catheter is then introduced through the cannula into the vein (Figure 7, not shown) and the cannula is then withdrawn and re-enclosed within the sheath 22 (Figure 8, not shown). The stiffener (20) for the catheter may be of flexible stainless steel and the remainder of the assembly, and optionally the stiffener, are of exemplified plastics materials.
