Abstract
An alkaline aq. solution contains (a) a water-soluble derivative of a copolymer of at least one aliphatic alpha-mono-olefine containing at least 6 carbon atoms and an anhydride of an olefinic a ,b -dicarboxylic acid, or partial ester thereof, the molar ratio of olefin to anhydride or ester being 1: 1-1: 1.9 and the molecular weight of the copolymer being 1000-10,000 and (b) an alkali metal sulphite or bisulphite. The copolymer may be derived from a mixture of C14- 18 aliphatic a -olefines and maleic anhydride and is rendered water-soluble by treatment with NaOH or NH4OH. The solution may also contain starch.ALSO:Paper base stock is treated with an alkaline aq. solution containing (a) a water-soluble derivative of a copolymer of at least one aliphatic alpha-mono-olefine containing at least 6 carbon atoms and an anhydride of an olefinic a , b -dicarboxylic acid, or partial ester thereof, the molar ratio of olefin to anhydride or ester being 1:1-1:1.9 and the molecular weight of the copolymer being 1,000-10,000 and (b) an alkali metal sulphite or bisulphite. The paper may be a porous waterleaf or slack-sized paper. The copolymer may be derived from a mixture of C14-18 aliphatic a -olefines and maleic anhydride and is rendered water-soluble by treatment with NaOH or NH4OH. The solution may also contain starch.
