Abstract

A method of surface treating a spherical article with a complemental spherical tool, the article and tool being held in contact with one another and each being constrained for rotation about its axis of symmetry which passes through the centre of curvature of the sphere, the upper one of the tool or article resting on the other and being freely rotatable about its axis which is vertical while the lower one is driven about its axis that has an average position which slants to one side of the vertical axis during the treatment. In apparatus for carrying out the method, a support 14 extends between uprights 12 and has a vertically adjustable pivot 22 on which is an arm 20 provided with a ball 32 for engaging a recess 76 in a tool 74 which may be made of cast iron. A plate 16 is rotatably mounted in the support and is formed with a groove along which a bracket 34 is adjustably mounted. The bracket carries a motor 42 connected by reduction gearing 44 and a belt drive 54 to a spindle 48 on which a workholder 56 for an article W, which may be of glass, quartz, silicon, sapphire or metal, is mounted. The lower end of the bracket has a pivot 73 adjustably mounted on a rod, in turn, 68 adjustably mounted on a crank 66 driven by a motor 62. In operation, the article W is mounted on the shaft 48 which is rotated by the motor 44, the rotation of the article transmitting rotation to the tool located with its axis vertical above the article. At the same time the motor 62 rotates the crank 66 so that the bracket, and hence the article, is rocked about the axis of the plate 16. A tray 58 is provided for collecting spent abrasive slurry. For grinding a concave surface, the article is mounted on the ball 32 of the arm 20 and the tool is mounted on the shaft 48. A number of small workpieces may be mounted on a carrier for simultaneous operation by the tool. In another embodiment, the rocking of the bracket is effected by a rack which is reciprocated by a crank driven from a motor and engages a pinion on the shaft of the plate 16. The articles may be polished by using a tool having a cloth or felt facing used with a rouge.
