Abstract

A zirconium - vanadium - silica pigment ("zirconium-vanadium turquoise blue") is prepared by heating zirconium oxide, silica, vanadium pentoxide (or a vanadium compound which gives this on heating), sodium fluoride and a substance containing sulphur oxyacid ions which is volatile in the heating stage. The substance may be ammonium sulphate, ammonium bisulphate, a soluble sulphate of zirconium, zirconium basic sulphate or any basic zirconium derivative containing added or absorbed sulphate. The substance may be present in a proportion corresponding to from 0.2 to 2% by weight of SO3 calculated on the weight of total raw materials.
