Abstract

1,120,686. Spherical bearing assemblies. MPB CORP. 8 Aug., 1966, No. 35345/66. Heading E2F. [Also in Division F2] A bearing assembly comprises an inner bearing member 2 having an outer partspherical shaped surface 9 and a cylindricallyshaped bore therein; a housing 1 having a bore therein with a part-spherical shaped surface 5; and a member 3 of synthetic plastics material positioned in the clearance between the member 2 and the housing 1. The maximum diameter of the member 2 is substantially the same as the minimum diameter of the bore in the housing 1 so that a clearance therebetween is a minimum. The member 3 is produced by filling the clearance with a heated, liquified, low-shrink synthetic plastics material, via an orifice 8 in the housing 1; the plastics material being slightly pressurised so as to fill the clearance in an unstressed condition and being heated just enough to become liquified. An integral key of plastics material is formed in the orifice 8 and prevents relative rotation between the member 3 and the housing 1. The member 2 may be made of hardened metal or sintered material and the housing 1 may be made of steel or of plastics material. In a modification, the housing 1 has a cylindrically-shaped bore. A bearing assembly may be provided at one end of a rod, the other end thereof being screw-threaded or a bearing assembly may be provided at each end of a link.
