Abstract
1,120,145. Fluid-friction brakes. SOC. D'APPLICATIONS DES MACHINES MOTRICES. 2 March, 1966 [9 March, 1965], No. 9109/66. Heading F2E. [Also in Division F4] Fluid for a fluid friction brake 1 of an engine the heat exchanger of which brake is constituted by the engine's radiator, is supplied simultaneously from the engine cooling system and from an auxiliary supply reservoir. The reservoir 10 comprises a flat tank having an internal diaphragm (21, Fig. 2, not shown) the underside of which is subjected to compressed air from a valve 16 operated by the pedal 9 to force fluid disposed above the diaphragm through a T-member 12 into the brake. Compressed air from the valve also actuates a servomotor 29 to open valve 8 to allow fluid to enter the brake from the engine jacket by way of conduit 7. A telescopic link 26 allows further movement of the pedal then to operate other brakes on the vehicle. On pedal release the valve 13 vents the lower chamber of the reservoir to empty the brake. A by-pass valve may be fitted, operable manually from the vehicle cab, to short circuit the valve 8.
