Abstract

A cyclic ether or cyclic aceta is polymerized in the presence of a catalytic amount of antimony pentafluoride or a complex thereof. Specified cyclic compounds are trioxan, tetroxan, 1,3 - dioxolan, tetrahydrofuran, 3,3 - bis - (chloromethyl) oxacyclobutane, styrene oxide, propylene oxide, 1,3,5-trioxepan, 1,3-dioxepan and ethyleneoxide. Comonomers which may be present in amounts up to 50% and preferably up to 20% are styrene, styrene derivatives, aldehydes, alkyl compounds, cyclic esters, unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, vinyl esters, vinyl esters and N-vinyl and C-vinyl heterocyclic compounds-lists are given. Specified complexes are those with alcohols, phenols, acids, ethers, acid anhydrides, ketones, esters, aldehydes, dialkyl sulphides and mercaptans. The polymerization preferably takes place under anhydrous conditions, by bulk, solution or suspension. In solution polymerization the catalyst may be dissolved in one solvent, e.g. fluorinated hydrocarbons or nitroparaffins and the monomer(s) in another, e.g. cyclohexane. Examples are given of the polymerization of the following monomers using antimony pentafluoride (f) and its complexes: (1) trioxan; f, (2) trioxan + -styrene; f-diethylethereate; (3) trioxandioxolan, f-di-ethylethereate; (4) trioxanstyrene, f-1,1,2-trichloro - 1,2,2 - trifluoroethane; (5) trioxan-beta - propiolactone, f - ethylsulphide; (6) dioxolane, same as (4); (7) dioxolan-indene, f - diethyl - ethereate; (8) dioxolan - trioxan, f - diethylsulphide; (9) trioxan - chloral; f-methylcyanide; (10 trioxan - styrene, f-acetic acid; (11) tetrahydrofuran - 3,3 - bis - (chloromethyl) - oxacyclobutane, as (11); (12) 3,3-bis - (chloromethyl) oxacyclobutane - styrene, f-acetic acid, and (13) trioxane-styrene, f-diethylethereate.
