Abstract

1,119,170. Coating moving webs. CONTINENTAL GUMMI-WERKE A.G. 22 Nov.. 1966 [23 Nov., 1965], No. 52141/66. Heading D1L. A moving carrier web 5 is coated with a layer of plastics material by applying the plastics material in the form of a web 13 of lesser thickness than the desired coating layer and displaced at a greater linear speed than that of the carrier web in the same direction as the carrier web. The prior drawing out of the coating material into a relatively thin web results in increased diffusion with the atmosphere of air bubbles entrained in the mixture and so prevents faulty points occuring in the coating layer due to air bubbles. The carrier web is moved by a conveyor 1 beneath a fixed doctor blade 2. Arranged in series with the conveyor is a drum 8, rotating in the direction of the arrow at a faster speed than the conveyor and dipping into a container 10 holding coating plastics material. An adjustable doctor blade 9, spaced at a lesser distance from the drum 8 than is the doctor blade 2 from the carrier web surface draws out the material into a thin layer which is conveyed as a web 13 via a baffle 14 from drum 8 to delivery position A of the conveyor 1. Due to the relative speeds mixture accumulates in front of blade 2.
