Abstract

111,788. Francis, D. M. April 12, 1917. Valves; valve-gear. - At the larger end of each of the rotary conical valves 16 of a four-cylinder engine is an auxiliary explosion chamber 18 communicating with the cylinder and with the inlet and exhaust passages by means of passages 7, 19, 20 independent of the main passages 17, 8 of the valve and cylinder. The explosion occurring in the chamber 18 prevents the valve from being lifted off its seat by the explosion in the cylinder. The valves are in alinement, with their larger ends facing in the same direction, and are connected for simultaneous rotation by means of stems 21, each rigidly secured to the smaller end of one valve and slidable in a seating 26 in the larger end of the adjacent valve. The caps 15, through which the valve stems pass, are provided with packing 25. Each valve is held on its seat by a spring 23 between a washer 22 and an element 24 secured to the stem 21. The stem 21 of the end valve is provided with a sprocket wheel driven from the main shaft at a quarter of the speed of that shaft. In the form shown in Fig. 5, a lubricant chamber 33 is provided 'between the smaller end of the valve and the housing and is supplied with lubricant by a pipe 35 provided with a check valve. A lubricant groove 38 in the housing is spaced from the chamber 33. The valve stem in this form passes through an aperture in the smaller end of the housing, packing 22<1> being provided.
