Abstract
1,117,670. Metal working presses. E. W. BLISS CO. 24 Aug., 1965 [22 Sept., 1964], No. 36386/65. Heading B3H. [Also in Division B5] A stamping, coining or embossing press is provided with misalignment-preventing means comprising lower and upper guide means 22, 60 co-operating with a ram G connected to a movable platen F. The lower guide means includes a pair of axially tapered ring members 24, 26 (Fig. 3) having mutually engaging tapered surfaces 55, 57. The member 26 is axially movable relative to the member 24 in response to differential fluid pressures acting thereon, thereby causing expansion and contraction of the members 26, 24 respectively so that side play between the ram G and cylinder H is eliminated. The member 26 may be axially split at intervals in its circumference to increase the effect. The upper guide means comprises a plurality of equally spaced hydrostatic bearing pads 62 each having a fluid pressure inlet 63 and outlet 64. A pressure control system (70, 72, 75, 76 etc.), Fig. 6 (not shown), separate from the ram pressure source, delivers and exhausts fluid under pressure to and from the pressure pads 62 at equal rates of flow so that any misalignment of the movable platen F will be resisted by compensating increases and decreases in the radially opposing pads 62.
