In a method of measuring the stiffness of a flexible material, the material is placed over an apertured weighing platform 2, which is spaced from a lower plate 3, the material being pushed through the aperture by a reciprocable plunger 4 until the end of the plunger abuts the plate 3 to actuate an electrical contact indicating that the material has bent through a predetermined angle. The force required to do this is measured on the balance 1. The balance may be replaced by another form of dynamometer. The spacing of the platform 2 and the plate 3 may be altered.
