Abstract
1,117,438. Lifting jacks. N. H. CARGILE. 18 Oct., 1966 [18 Oct., 1965], No. 46459/66. Heading B8J. [Also in Divisions E1 and F1] A drilling barge B carrying a derrick D is raised above the water level W along spuds S by jacking mechanism 10. Each spud S is made of a cylindrical member 17 having a pair of L-shaped flanges 18 welded along its length, which flanges 18 are spaced from one another by regularly arranged support gussets 20 which provide upper and lower surfaces 20a and 20b, respectively, for co-operation with the associated jacking mechanism 10. The jacking mechanism includes an upper ratchet mechanism 15 and a lower ratchet mechanism 115 connected by an hydraulic cylinder apparatus 16. The ratchet mechanism 15 includes a ratchet member 24 pivoted at 25 and positionally controlled by a ratcheting cylinder 26 so that either face 24a is arranged to engage a lower gusset surface 20b or, as shown, face 24b is arranged to engage an upper gusset face 20a. The upper ratchet mechanism 15, together with the ratcheting cylinder 26, is attached to the piston of the cylinder apparatus 16, while the lower ratchet mechanism is fixed with respect to the barge deck 11 and located in a base support 13 to which the cylinder apparatus 16 is pivoted at 33. Surfaces 24c, 24d on the ratchet member 24 are arranged so as to slide over the point 20p of the gussets 20, on relative movement of the spud S past the ratchet 24, against the pressure of the ratcheting cylinder 26 which is provided with a variable relief valve (78), Fig. 6 (not shown). Control switches 35, 39 indicate the completion of the extension and retraction strokes. The apparatus is provided with a combined electrical and hydraulic control circuit (see Division F1), Fig. 6 (not shown), for operation of the device.
