Abstract
A process for the preparation of an at least partially fluorinated aromatic or aliphatic compound comprises fluorinating an aromatic compound halogenated with a halogen other than fluorine or an aliphatic compound halogenated with at least one halogen substituent other than fluorine in the presence of a fluorinated complex coprecipitated metal-alumina catalyst prepared by mixing a solution containing in combined form a metal of Group 1B, 2B, 6B or 8 of the Periodic Table (Lange's Hand-book, 8th Edition) with a solution of alumina to form a complex metal-alumina co-precipitate and then fluorinating the co-precipitate. The fluorination of the organic compound may take place in the liquid or the vapour phase. The fluorination of the metal-alumina complex may be performed before or during the contacting of the organic halogen compound with the fluorinating agent. The organic halogen compound may be formed in situ by simultaneously feeding a fluorinating agent, a halogenating agent and an appropriate organic compound to the reactor: halogenated compounds are obtained as by-products in this modification.ALSO:Fluorinated complex coprecipitated metal-alumina catalysts are prepared by mixing a solution containing in combined form a metal from Groups 1B, 2B, 6B and 8 of the Periodic Table (Longe's Handbook, 8th Edition) particularly Cu and Co. and a solution of alumina to form a complex metal-alumina coprecipitate and then fluorinating the coprecipitate.
