Abstract

1,116,607. Caulking. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 10 Jan., 1967 [12 Jan., 1966], No. 1345/67. Heading B3U. Apparatus for caulking fuel-element plates (1), Fig. 1 (not shown), to their supports (9, 11) by driving a caulking projection 25, Fig. 5, into the land between plate-receiving grooves 13 comprises a member 15 for insertion between the plates and of length at least equal to that of the plates, and a cam 19 including the projection 25 and rotatable in a recess 17 in the member 15 by a member 27 having a hook 31 engaging a recess 35 in the cam, the member 27 being operated by a lever 39, and the cam 19 and members 15, 27 being of the same thickness and together being substantially rectangular. A jig 53, for straddling the apparatus, may be used to facilitate insertion of the apparatus between plates (1) if these do not extend to the ends of the supports (9, 11). With the apparatus in position, the lever 39 is operated to drive the projection 25 into the land and an opposite projection 37, if one is provided, into the opposite land. Only one plate is secured at each operation if the projection 25 is offset, Fig. 6 (not shown). As the tool is progressively withdrawn, different locating holes 51, 49 may be used from the lever to reduce the distance between the lever and the plates.
