Abstract
1,116,436. Roll for heating travelling artificial filaments. FIBER INDUSTRIES Inc. 22 Dec., 1965 [29 Jan., 1964], No. 54309/65. Heading F2U. [Also in Division B5] A device for heating travelling artificial filaments comprises a hollow metal roll 16 (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) fixedly mounted on a rotatable shaft 17 and provided with a back plate 18 having an annular trough 19 extending inwardly towards the hollow portion of the roll 16. The back plate 18 is shaped in such a way that a drip ring assembly 20 which is mounted on a stationary heat core 21 will prevent the escape of a heat conducting liquid or freeflowing particulate solid 22 from the inside of the hollow portion of roll 16. The stationary core 21 projects within the hollow portion of roll 16, is so shaped as to conform to the interior shape of roll 16 and is closely spaced from the interior circumferential surface of the roll. Within the core 21 is a passageway 23 for the flow of heating fluid used to heat core 21. The heating fluid is introduced into the passageway 23 through the inlet 24 and is discharged through the outlet 26 (Fig. 3). The heat conducting material 22 is uniformly distributed by centrifugal force when the roll 16 is rotating. An annular stationary guard 25 surrounding the back plate 18 of the roll 16 prevents any heat conducting material which may escape from the roll 16 from contaminating the filaments being heated on the peripheral surface of the roll 16. The bottom surface of the core 21 is flat to provide a reservoir 27 (Fig. 3) for excess heat conducting material 22 and to contain all the material when the roll is not rotating.
