Abstract
1,116,358. Piezoelectric elements. BLACKSTONE CORPORATION. 17 Aug., 1965 [5 Feb., 1965], No. 35309/65. Heading H1E. A transducer comprises an element of piezoelectric or electrostrictive material sandwiched between two masses, one solid, the other having holes or grooves. The masses are made of the same material, e.g. steel, and the transducer is at least one half wavelength long at the resonant frequency. The elements 10, 11 shown are made of quartz or barium titanate and are compressed by means of a bolt 15 between a solid mass 13 and a grooved mass 14. The grooving provides a better impedance match with a propagation medium, e.g. a cleaning bath. Modifications are described in which the upper mass is provided with longitudinal grooves or is made of circular or hexagonal tubes arranged longitudinally.
