Abstract

1,116,117. Variable inductance coils. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 27 Sept., 1966, No. 43118/66. Heading H1T. A transformer or inductor for use in a tuning arrangement consists of a container (8, Fig. 5, not shown) in which is placed one or more coil assemblies comprising a spiral coil 3 and a single turn 6, made of thin or thick film deposits, placed on opposite sides of a substrate 1 and one surface of container 8, which may be made of either metal or insulating material, is provided with a slot (14) which permits movement of a displaceable member which varies the self inductance of the coils. The displaceable member consists of a flat plate 11 of high conductivity metal sandwiched between two pieces 12 of low power factor plastics material and a cut-out 13 modifies the rate at which the inductances of the coils vary with movement of the displaceable member. In an alternative arrangement the displaceable member is made of low power-factor insulating material having a high dielectric constant. In a modification, the coil assemblies are encapsulated in a synthetic arrangement and a space is left between the substrates to permit movement of the displaceable member.
