Abstract
Crystallized glass is made by heating a mixture of a metallurgical slag and silica or another silicon dioxide-containing substance to form a melt and agitating the melt until the silica or other silicon dioxide-containing substance is dissolved in the melt. The slag sulphides act as nucleating agents. The slag may be a semi-basic or semi-acid blast furnace slag while the silicon-dioxide - containing substances may be clay, clay products, rock minerals or metal ore treatment wastes. Materials may be added to colour the melt and up to 15% alkaline earth metal compounds added to improve the mould properties while sodium sulphate or soda and sand may also be added. The melt may be degassed and up to 10% of a sulphide or chloride added. Further when the product has a black discolorization due to the presence of metal sulphides, from 3 to 4% zinc sulphate may be added to remove this. A typical crystallized glass product has the composition: silica 59%, alumina 11%, calcium oxide 21%, sodium oxide 5% and zinc sulphide 4%.
