Abstract

A polymer containing repeating units having the formula <FORM:1115014/C3/1> in which R1 represents a carbon chain having up to 5 carbon atoms and substituted with up to 3 substituents of the formula -COXR2R3 in which X is -N < or <FORM:1115014/C3/2> where R4 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having up to 5 carbon atoms and R2 and R3 are each a hydrogen atom, or an alkyl group containing up to 5 carbon atoms which may be substituted with alkoxy or hydroxyl groups, may be prepared by reacting poly(vinyl alcohol) with an ester of a mono or polybasic fatty acid having a terminal isocyanate group and thereafter hydrolysing the polymeric ester so formed and reacting the polymeric acid with an amine. Preferred polymers have repeating units of formula <FORM:1115014/C3/3> where "n" is an integer from 1 to 5. Copolymers having repeating units of Formula I or II with units of Formula III <FORM:1115014/C3/4> where Y is a hydroxyl, an ester, an N-alkyl amide, an N,N-dialkyl amide group or a group -OCONH-R5-COOR6 where R5 and R6 are each carbon chains containing up to 5 carbon atoms, may be made. In the examples the polymers formed contain varying amounts of alkanol amide carbamate, ester carbamate, carboxy carbamate and vinyl alcohol. The polymers may be used in light-sensitive gelatin silver halide emulsions.
