A vehicle door fastening device comprises a latch structure with a cover plate which partially shrouds a latch member 3 and also shrouds guide means, and a striker structure which comprises a striker element 5 and an anti-burst plate 4 disposed at one side of the striker element, the cover plate being cut away to allow entry of the striker element and plate 4 which during door closure enters behind the latch member 3 on the opposite side to the cover plate and engages between a spring-loaded wedge 22 and a guide member of the guide means to provide vertical guiding of the striker element into latching engagement with the latch member, in the latching position the plate 4 engaging the guide means to provide vertical restraint. As described the plate 4 is generally rectangular and is secured by screws passing through the element 5 and an element 6 to a door frame. The guide means comprises a guide member 17 having upper and lower jaws 18, 19 respectively and the spring loaded wedge 22 which in the latching position of the plate 4 urges it against the lower face of the jaw 18 to prevent rattle. The latch member 3 has claws 9, 10 which receive the element 5 and is held in a safety latching or fully latching position by a spring loaded detent member 12 engaging a tooth 16 or 14 respectively therof. The member 12 is rotated to disengage it from the latch member 3 to allow the latter to rotate under the action of a spring 15 to releasing position, either by depressing an external push button which causes a contactor lever 34 to pivot so that a projection 36 thereof engages the member 12, or by operating an internal handle which causes a lever 27 to engage an arm 29 of the member 12. The device is put in a locking condition by pivoting a locking plate 30 so that a projection 41 thereon lies in the path of the contactor lever 34 and prevents its operation. The plate 30 is moved to locking position either by a link 42 actuated by an external key lock, or by a link 33 actuated by an internal handle via a lever 28. A projection 39 of the latch member 3 engages a projecting lobe 38 of the plate 30 to pivot the latter from its locking to its unlocking position if an attempt is made to shut the door with the plate in the locking position.
