Abstract
1,114,568. Bearings. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. 16 June, 1965 [16 July, 1964 (2)], No. 25389/65. Heading F2A. A gas-lubricated bearing has resilient means positioned between a non-rotating member of the bearing and its support member. In an embodiment, the resilient means 16, Fig. 1, is located between a non-rotating shaft 12 and its support 17. The resilient means 16 may be elastic material such as silicone elastomer or polyethylene, may be springs, may be mats of metallic or non-metallic fibres and may be magnetic suspension. Pressurized gas is supplied through bores 14 and 15 in the shaft 12 to a clearance 18 between said shaft and a rotor 11 mounted therabout. In other embodiments, the resilient means comprises a suspension wire 26a, Fig. 4, one end of which is secured to a non-rotating shaft 22 and the other end of which is supported by a member 34, axial damping being effected by a resilient washer 26b; comprises metal rods or tubes 50, Fig. 5, each of which is secured to one end of a non- rotating shaft 42 and to a fixed structure, damping being effected by lead-shot in cavities 51; and comprises circular springs 123 and 125, Fig. 7, radial springs 123, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), coil springs 137, Fig. 10 (not shown), and corrugated metal springs 123, Figs. 11 and 12 (not shown).
