Abstract
1,114,258. Coating ingot - moulds; gels. FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 20 Oct., 1965 [2 Nov., 1964], No. 44596/64. Heading C3N. [Also in Divisions B3, C1 and C5] Carbon is deposited on the wall of a metal ingot-mould and a non-oxidizing, non-corrosive atmosphere may be formed by igniting (during or before pouring) a gel composition comprising: (1) a carbocyclic compound containing hydrogen, or a mixture of such compounds, (2) an inflammable liquid and (3) a gelling agent. The composition, which may further contain an acyclic organic compound such as a paraffin or nitroparaffin, may be used in a combustible container, e.g. of cardboard &c. The compound (1) could include hydrocarbons such as naphthalene &c., phenolic compounds such as resorcinol &c., esters of carbocyclic acids such as pentaerythritol &c., terpene compounds such as camphor &c., natural or synthetic resins containing carbocyclic groups such as copal, phenolformaldehyde &c. or nitrogenous compounds, e.g. α-naphthylamine and aminoanthraquinones. The gelling agent (3) could be a metal soap such as aluminium stearate &c. or alkyl ammonium montmorillonite. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,043,176.
