Abstract
1,114,031. Gas blast switches. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. 11 Jan., 1966 [21 Jan., 1965], No. 1178/66. Heading N1N. A gas blast switch has a flow-directing nozzle 35 surrounding its fixed contact assembly the orifice 40 being located between the contacts when they are open so that the area between the orifice 40 and the hollow movable contact 24 is half the area of the open end 36 of contact 24. The orifice 40 may be formed of p.t.f.e. or metal and is supported on an insulating tube 33 from a conducting fixed contact support 21 supported from a tank (10) by an insulator 13. The movable contact 24 is supported in a shield 25 spaced from the support 21 by insulating rods 26. The lower end of contact 24 carries an isolating contact co-operating with contacts 43 on a cross-bar 18. In operation, as cross-bar 18 moves downwards, a blast valve 45 opens to supply SF6 from a high-pressure reservoir (12) through conduit 29 to the flow director and contacts 23, 24 separate under spring 39. Further downward movement separates the isolating contacts 43. The fixed contact 23 is provided with an arc electrode 32 which may have a shaped tip (58) (Fig. 5, not shown). The SF6 is returned to the reservoir 12 by a compressor (not shown).
