Abstract
1,114,005. Mass spectrometers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 27 July, 1966 [12 Aug., 1965], No. 34603/65. Heading H1D. In a mass spectrometer with a magnetic analyser whose field is varied to scan the mass spectrum, the effect of irregularities in the magnetic field due ,to eddy currents is compensated by means of an auxiliary ion beam control device externally located relative to the magnetic poles. The auxiliary device may be an auxiliary deflection magnet located before or after the analysing magnet, or a magnetic member placed close to the poles of the analyser magnet. In the double-focusing instrument with an electrostatic analyser described the auxiliary device may be a unipotential three-element lens located before the electrostatic analyser, between the electrostatic analyser and the magnetic analyser or after the magnetic analyser.
